Autumn days
By Andy | October 9, 2007
Had an easy short run on Tuesday as recovery and a circuit class on Wednesday. Went to the running club on Thursday for about 7-8 miles which felt fast. Then on Friday I ran my first 5k for nearly 3 years and was reasonably pleased considering I have not done any speedwork in that time. A quick hour in the gym on Saturday was followed by 25-26 miles on Sunday across the New Forest (mostly off road). It was a beautiful autumnal morning – definitely the best time of year to be running. Am looking forward to doing some long runs in the Forest this winter, they will be the basis for my endurance training. One more long run before Dublin.

Andy,
I read your MdS Race Report today - and was truly overwhelmed and inspired! Very well written, a great description of the ups and downs of the race and a wonderful personal story! I’d like to meet you at the TM the latest and share a few stories about the MdS, which I will do for a second time in 2008. I was just wondering - your description sounds a lot like the MdS 2006. Was it the 2007 edition that you are describing?
After doing the 2006 MdS and almost dropping out, I did the same as you did and wrote it all down, promising my wife I would never race it again. OK, it took a few bottles of champagne, some boxes of chocolates, a lot of convincing and a few dozen of roses to persuade my wife that I have to do it “just one more time” in 2008
Sounds familiar?
I’d like to share my story with you as you have shared yours, but unfortunately, it’s in German. At least you might appreciate the photos: http://web.mac.com/adoerfler/Web-Site/MdS_2006.html
Well, I’ll share the story in English at one of the next races, if you like. These are my upcoming challenges - what are yours?
Munich Marathon, October 14th (Germany)
Five2go trail marathon, November 10th
Luton Marathon, December 2nd
Tring2Town, February 2nd
Thames Meander, February 16th
I hope to meet you soon in person,
Andreas Doerfler

Hi Andreas
Good to hear from you and thank you for your kind comments regarding the MDS 2006. As you know it was a bit of a battle out there, one which I lost at the end of Day 3.
I managed to get a translation of your race report and your story is inspirational. I notice that you too had your difficulties but managed to overcome them – well done!
My wife knows I won’t be happy until I have gone back to the MDS and completed it which is why I am returning in 2008. She has told me I have to stay in Morocco if I don’t finish it this time!
Well done also at the recent 24 hour race. I have never done one but always thought about it. It must have been a very long day. When we meet you can tell me more about it.
The upcoming races I have entered are:
29th October Dublin Marathon
19th January Thames Path Ultra
2nd + 3rd February Tring to Town 80
16th February Thames Meander
I may go to Luton in December too but I am not sure if I can do it yet. The two events on 19th Jan and 2/3rd Feb will be used simply for distance training whereas the Thames Meander is the main event for me where I will use it as a full dress rehearsal. With a bit of luck I can get the space next to the heater on the floor again.
Thanks again for your comments and I hope to see you at one of the events soon
All the best
Andy
