What after the TM?

By Patrick | October 18, 2007

I rushed down to the gym and did a quick 7 kms on the treadmill again. Not a great run, but good to add a few more kilometers in to the training diary. I hope to do 45-50 kms this week. By next week I will be back at my usual dose of around 55 kms a week.

I am starting to look beyond the Thames Meander. What other races should I try for in 2008. A friend of mine who has done most of the worlds classic ultras - Comrades, Western States 100, Ultra Tour du Mont Blanc - is trying to interest me in the Grand Union Canal Run in May.

It looks like a great race. But 145 miles! I have never run beyond 62 miles yet. Entries open in November. I will have to decide then.

    Patrick………

I completed the GUCR this year and had never run beyond 26.2 miles. Didnt bother with mega long training runs, just lots of back to back runs between 14 & 18 miles. Entering next year but will have longer runs under my belt as got the ultra bug. Longer recovery required though!!!!!

Thanks a lot for the encouragement. A real achievement indead to go from 26 miles to 145 miles in one shot. I will do the Thames Meander in Feb, a standard marathon in late March and a 50 km race in early May as preparation.

    Patrick……….
Will see you at the TM in Feb, doing the Tring to Town which is useful as part of the route. Check out GUCR 08 on the runners world forum as some of the guys get together to various parts of the race about April time. Entries now being taken so you need to post the cheque straight away if not done already as fills up quickly. Good luck with the training(plodding) and stay injury free.

    Paddy,
I have sent in my entry form. Hopefully there will be three of us from Sweden on the starting line. On of them - Christan Ritella - is two time Sparthalon finisher and could be a candidate to win the GUCR.
