Andy - why blog?
Firstly let me say I am honoured that Kathy has asked me to put to print the drivel that flows through my mind. When I have mentioned to friends that I would possibly doing a blog they all seem surprised that I haven’t already. Probably because some of them seem to follow what I do already with some interest.
Secondly let me say that I am in no way an expert on anything at all and anything I write is purely from personal opinion and/or experience. I am an ordinary bloke from an unathletic background who happens to enjoy running round the countryside a bit. I have tried many things over the last few years in pursuit of improved speed, nutrition, equipment and fitness but not all and I can only speak from my own experience. Off the back of that if anyone wishes to use any of my ideas - feel free, but don’t blame me if it doesn’t work for you. Everyone is different and different ideas may or may not work for other people. If you try some of my tips you do so at your own risk.
That leads me nicely into why I am doing this blog.
Three reasons come to mind, firstly because it may help others and provide some ideas, tips, inspiration and general help for this event and others.
Secondly it will also help me, to focus on my training, nutrition and equipment a bit more and not allow me to lose that focus too easily (which can happen as other parts of your life take priority).
Finally because of this event in particular. As well as being a warm-up for the Marathon des Sables as it was originally planned it has become an event in its own right. It has become one of my favourite events for many reasons which is why I am so enthusiastic. Obviously the course itself is superb, stunning scenery and landmarks along the way combined with the challenge of completing over 50 miles in difficult conditions carrying several kilos of equipment.
However the event itself is about the people, people like Steve, Kathy, Alex and others who make it special and allow others to test themselves whilst giving encouragement, help and a kick if required. Mostly though you will notice the competitors, many who become friends – if only for 24 hours while you push yourselves along the Thames. We will all be helping each other in different ways but not against each other. Please read my report on the website for my personal experience. I look forward to 16th February and another adventure.
