Moving forward

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

I am keeping up the good streak that started last week. The treadmill in my gym was broken this morning so I had to settle for 50 mins on the exercise bike instead. I count that as 10 kms of running in my training diary. Maybe that is not correct, but I like to be able to compare training weeks.

We have wonderful winter weather here. A nice crisp cold, a clear sky and no wind at all. I might go out for an evening run as well tonight when the children are tucked in their beds.

On track again - hopefully

Monday, December 17th, 2007

I have been well for a week now and my training is slowly picking up. I did 10 plus 16 kms during the weekend and enjoyed it.

The weather is cold in Sweden now. This morning it was minus 2 degrees and a little snow on the ground. But that is actually good weather for running because the ground is fairly dry and the snow makes it brighter. The worst conditions for training are when the temperature moves under the freezing point at night and above during the day. Then you have ice and water on the streets both at once.

9 weeks left to the Thames Meander. Deduct 2 weeks for a taper which leaves 7 weeks of effective training. Not much really.

Trying again

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

The cold has gone I make another try to get back in the training routine. I did 7 kms on the treadmill today in a nice relaxed mood. I will do the same tomorrow and then build from there. Hopefully I will meet no more setbacks for a while.

The days are short in Stockholm and with no snow on the ground it is just dark and gloomy everywhere. I have signed up for a 64 km clubrun Dec 30. Something to look forward to and to keep me motivated.

Black hole

Monday, December 10th, 2007

I am down with cold. This is the third time in six months I am out of training because of illness. I am starting to despair a bit. If this bad streak continues I will have serious trouble preparing for the TM. Nothing to do but rest and hope I get well soon.

Back on the road

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

I have recovered from my allergic shock last week and went off medication on Friday. I did my first run on Sunday after a more than a weeks rest. The weather was horrible and was soaked after a few minutes but the legs really wanted to run and I did a slow 18 km run to feel the road under my feet again.

November was a disaster trainingwise for me. I really hope that December will turn out better. If I don´t manage to pick up my training soon February 16 will be a long painful day for me

A scary experience

Monday, November 26th, 2007

I am back at home after a scary experience which ended at the hospital.

We had a get together after-work before the weekend. While I was drinking my first beer I grabbed a chunk of peanuts and did not see that the where other nuts in the bowl. I happened to eat a paranut. After a few minutes I realised that something was wrong. My tongue and throat started to swell, I became red in the face and started to sweat tremendously. I hoped that the problems would disappear but suddenly I became all dissy and passed out on the floor in front of all my boss and colleagues.

I got to hospital and they see that I had suffered a severe allergic shock. They could fight with a shot of adrenalin and other medications. After I night at the hospital I am back at home now and I feel much better.

No training for a few days though.

Autumn again

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

It´s warmer again and all the snow has disappeared. It looks a lot gloomier outside but it is easier to run. I did a fast 13 km run yesterday at a 5 min/km pace. I really felt relieved to able to run freely outdoors again. I have done a lot of treadmill running the last weeks.

Treadmill running is efficient and has many advantages. The biggest advantage is that it makes you appreciate running outdoors.

More speed training

Friday, November 16th, 2007

For a long while I have frustrated over my lack of speed. I would like to be able to cruise along for several hours at a speed of 5 mins/km.

This week I have done two speed sessions on the treadmill. Yesterday I did 2 times 4 kms and today 3 times 3 kms. I held an average speed of 4m50s/km. It was not an impressive start but quite O.K. I should be able to the intervalls at 4m30s/km in a month or so.

Speed training outdoors is out of the question now. The streets have nasty patches of ice everywhere and the temperature goes below zero in evenings.

The winter has arrived

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

The temperature was below zero this morning and the streets are covered with snow, and worse, with nasty patches of ice. If it stays cold it will be tougher to train outdoors from now on. To run on snow covered streets is O.K in daylight but in midwinter there are not many hours of daylight in Sweden. I will have to invest in a good headlight. I will need one for TM anyway.

November and December are the worst months for running. I did not do many miles at this time last year. But I plan do better this year. If I want to do O.K on the TM i February I can not let my training slip too much now.

Not a great run today

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

My youngest daughter kept me awake part of the night so I am not in top shape today. Anyhow I still snuck down to the gym at lunch and did 8 kms on the treadmill. Not a great run, I felt tired from the start and never got in to any good running rythm. But it is still good the keep the legs going even on bad days.

No I am off to a meeting between the government and the largest swedish trade unions.
